History of 911

911 is the number set aside by telephone companies throughout the United States to put you in touch with police, fire or ambulance emergency services. 911 was chosen as the universal number because it is easy to remember by everyone. 911 was first used in Great Britain in 1937. The first system used in the United States was on February 1, 1968 in Haleyville, Alabama.

By using 911, response time is shortened and there is less confusion and delays in getting the emergency help you need.

911 saves lives and property.
